Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest

The Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest began in 1964 when a tsunami washed out the Elk Creek Bridge, and residents were relatively isolated until a new bridge could be built. That spring, local families gathered for a Sandcastle Contest to entertain their children and attract visitors. That Sandcastle Contest became one of the largest sandcastle contests on the West Coast.
The contest has since grown to draw 10,000 to 15,000 visitors each year. Participants of all ages and skill levels compete in various divisions, from Masters to Juniors, to showcase their intricate and imaginative sand sculptures on the beach against the iconic backdrop of Haystack Rock. The contest is complemented by festivities such as the Singing Sands 5k Fun Run & Walk and a beach concert with a bonfire, featuring live music and s’mores.
