Overview
Wonderwood is an immersive, artist‑driven experience nestled in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood, created by local visual artist Mike Bennett in a repurposed 1913 Bank of America building. The space offers a 7,000 sq ft walk‑through art installation set in the fictional realm of “Maplehold,” featuring hundreds of hand‑painted cutouts—everything from sleeping dragons to forest creatures. The installation features a nine‑hole indoor mini‑golf experience, complete with mechanical wizardry (like spinning floors and Plinko‑style obstacles) and individual storylines per hole.
Adjacent sits Wonderwood Springs, a permanent fantasy‑medieval themed café and gathering hub. Decked out with over 400 of Bennett’s hand‑painted characters, antiques, and playful décor, the café serves whimsical menu items—including themed lattes (like Butter Brew and mushroom hot chocolate), Sparrow Bakery pastries, grilled cheeses, soft‑serve ice cream, local beers, ciders, wine, and canned cocktails. Open seven days a week, it doubles as a community space for board games, live music, trivia, and pop‑up events, embodying Bennett’s vision of a “third place” where friends and strangers alike can connect over enchantment and creativity.
