This is such a beautiful photo, but with it is some rather sad news, posted via Instagram by the Orca Network and Langley Whale Center on Whidbey Island last fall.
“Today we are honoring and remembering J52- aka Sonic. Here is a favorite picture of him getting ‘snuggled’ by his mom J36, taken last year in March,” they write.
Sadly, they add, “Southern Resident Orcas are starving chronically and sporadically, leading to still births and early deaths, compounded by toxic pollutants in their bodies. There are several great restoration projects taking place. The main goal is to remove the four snake river dams.”
We hope we can save some of our most magnificent creatures that we’re so lucky to have living in the Northwest. We interviewed Orca Network last year here if you’d like more information.
