Food is medicine; the kitchen, our healing place.
The Columbia Gorge is the idyllic setting for a new adventure in the culinary world that is the Pacific Northwest. Roots Farmacy creates a personalized cooking and dining experience like no other. Owners Annie McHale and Curt Gray have envisioned a life-style change for themselves and are inviting others to join them along the way.
Roots Farmacy’s motto is “Food is medicine; the kitchen, our healing place.” They believe in the relationship between food, health, and quality of life. They feel people have lost that connection with the food they put into their bodies. People used to grow most of their own food, knew how it was grown and raised, and ate what was in season. Getting back to that concept of knowing where your food came from is what Roots Farmacy is all about. Connections. Connecting with your food, connecting with yourself, connecting with each other, connecting with your community. One could say “getting back to our roots.”
In this disconnected time, people are craving face time with friends. Roots Farmacy offers a way to do that and in a very customizable way. Only have time for a quick afternoon cooking class? Annie offers a Saturday afternoon class preparing one meal. Have time for the full Gorge-to-Table dining experience? Bring a friend and come learn how to prepare a full meal from start to finish, including gathering the produce from their garden, preparing it, cooking it, and sitting down to a relaxing meal enjoying it.
Annie will work with you in advance to create a menu to suit your tastes and dietary needs. She keeps the classes small to create a more convivial and personalized experience. If you are interested in a little more downtime, come for a couple of nights! They have 6 rooms for overnight stays. Perfect for a retreat with friends or family, a little down time by yourself, or a lovely little vacation. Their Gorge-to-Table Experience is listed on Airbnb Experiences and offers a fully immersed cooking experience. During your retreat, all meals are included and you are encouraged to help prepare and become part of their community. You will leave learning a new technique, a new ingredient, or a new flavor combination. They also offer special women’s retreats for nurturing and healing, both body and mind.
The location couldn’t be more perfect… just a few blocks from downtown Stevenson, Washington where you can go for a stroll, do some shopping, and live like a local. Right on the banks of the gorgeous Columbia River, you will be spoiled for choice on places to go and things to do. Stevenson is close to the beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails of the Columbia Gorge, the Historic Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway with winding roads and Vista House overlook, and the vibrant town of Hood River. But you may just choose to sit back and relax in their restored 1910 Craftsman home and read a good book or write in your journal.
A true farm-to-table experience, Annie and Curt have gotten to know the local farmers and ranchers who supply them with food products. They know that these farmers have made the conscious choice to be a small artisan provider because that it what they believe in personally. The life of an organic farmer is not one of luxury but rather a lifestyle choice. They understand the benefits of eating organically and sustainably. Food tastes better and is better for you.
Whether you choose to stay for several days, or stay for a couple hours, you will leave learning something new, creating new friends, and experiencing life in true Northwest style.
