This week’s Northwest Moment is an iconic view of the Northwest – Mount Hood.
To celebrate, here are 4 facts you might not know about Mt. Hood:
- Mt Hood is an active volcano and has a small chance of erupting again at any time. Similar to Mount St Helens, an eruption can cause a great deal of problems, but with chances so remote, we wouldn’t cancel any travel plans.
- The Mt Hood area has a number of tourist offerings – from skiing in winter to hiking in summer, a wonderful hotel, breweries, and scenic drives. Many of the main offerings are based in/near Government Camp.
- Mt Hood is the highest point in Oregon, but not as tall as Mount Rainer or Mount Adams in Washington state.
- The mountain is often not visible, or at times if it is, the top of the crest is wrapped in curious-looking circular clouds. They’re called lenticular clouds.
One of the best views of Mt Hood is from Trillium Lake (often called the mirror lake). But we loved seeing this great view on a drive in the area.
