The warm weather has finally arrived and those seemingly endless buckets of rain we had in recent months are finally drying up. This is the time of year to enjoy the spectacular beauty of the outdoors by getting out on one of the Olympic Peninsula’s many streams, rivers, lakes, or to the coast, and cast your line.
With that, we’ll introduce you to one of the region’s premier fly fishing guides: Bob Triggs, Little Stone Flyfisher.
Can you give us an overview of your organization?
I am an Olympic Peninsula fly fishing guide. We fish on the rivers, streams, lakes and beaches, for trout, sea-run coastal cutthroat trout, summer steelhead and salmon. This is catch and release, traditional fly fishing only. I teach the art and skills of fly fishing and fly casting, and I also teach fly tying. I welcome anglers and students of every ability, from beginners to experts. Individuals, small groups, large groups and classes, public presentations etc. I have been guiding here since 2001.
When is the best time to fish the Olympic Peninsula?
Our best season runs from April through October. And in fairer autumn weather we can fish through November.
How did you get started in the business?
I grew up fishing with bait and lures, in New York and New England. I began fly fishing in 1979. I have been guiding fly fishers since 1993. I have guided in New York, New England, Alaska, Kamchatka Russia and Washington state.
Is there something about you that not everyone knows?
I caught my first two trout on an Adirondack Mountain lake, when I was two years old. I caught them barehanded.
When you have a day off, what are some of your favorite things to do in the Northwest?
Fishing, camping, rowing, tying flies, reading, fishing . . .
If you had to describe what you love about the Northwest in 3 words, what would you choose?
Wilderness, Spaciousness, Welcome.
Is there anything else you’d like people to know?
I guide people in fly fishing for the sheer love of the game, and for the joy of being out in our beautiful wild surroundings. I value wilderness, wild fish and clean waters, air and soil. I am an environmental advocate, and I donate time each year to support regional and national efforts to conserve, restore and preserve our natural resources. I bring a lifetime of outdoors and wilderness experience and skills to your day on the water. If learning new skills, in new places, to fly fish and explore all that nature has to offer is your passion, then you’ll appreciate fishing with me.
