Wave watching in winter can be an amazing experience – just remember the amazing power of the ocean can be dangerous if you don’t take precautions. Here are a few safety rules:
Rule #1: Never turn your back on the ocean. Always keep your eye on the waves – stormy days can create powerful sneaker waves.
Rule #2: Do not stand on logs that have washed onshore. A log can be picked up by the water, roll, and tumble taking you with it.
Rule #3: Be aware of the tide coming in. You can walk onto certain rocks at low tide but they become fully surrounded by the ocean at high tide. It happens faster than you think. Free or low cost tide charts are available at area stores and are a good thing to have with you when planning a trip to the beach.
